Job Title: Western Head of Secondary Division / Department: Academic Reporting to: Co-Principals Job Location: YWIES-SHLG Direct Report: Co-Principals Effective Date: 2020-08-01
Overall Description: The Academic Coordinator’s focus is on delivering the promises of the mission, principles and practices of Yew Wah International Education School. The Academic Coordinator assists with staff recruitment and hiring, curriculum review and development, the planning of the yearly new staff orientation, in-service professional development days and the closing days of each year for students and staff. The Academic Coordinator conducts both spot observations to assist teachers in the development of particular skills and areas of development as well as longer, more formal, observations. The Academic Coordinator shares with the School leadership the responsibility for the end of the year evaluations of the Heads of Department. He/she is responsible for the supply teacher program and assignments, arranging for coverage during teacher absences, illnesses or personal days. Working with the Heads of Department, the Academic Coordinator oversees the academic needs of all the students. The Academic Coordinator maintains active communication with parents of students who are experiencing difficulties at the school and is able to represent to them the views of the School leadership and the Foundation.
Specific Responsibilities: 1. Staff Supervision and Support • Helping monitor that all staff carry out their supervision duties, including, but not limited to, lesson preparation and delivery, the timely marking of student work, the accurate recording of marks in PowerSchool, and the submission of high-quality semester comments. • In coordination with school leadership, to share responsibility for the evaluation of Heads of Department in their end-of-the-year reviews. • Reviewing daily cover for absent teachers, assigning internal coverage or arranging for outside supply teachers as needed; working with school leadership on interviewing candidates for supply teachers and arranging the roster. • Bringing to the notice of the leadership any concerns over the professional conduct of a teacher including negligence or any concern about staff relationships, teacher/parent, or teacher/student relationships. • Working with School leadership to coordinate external professional development workshops, courses, or other opportunities to improve staff training and development. 2. Instructional Coordination • Teaching at least one course in their area of expertise. • Assisting in identifying broad annual professional development goals for the teaching staff. • Providing ongoing support for school staff new to the school. • Scheduling regular staff meetings and meetings of the Academic Leadership Team. Consulting with Senior Management Team to prepare an agenda for those meetings, and distributing the agenda beforehand and the minutes after the meeting. • Coordinating and advising teaching staff on required stages of curriculum development, such as schemes of work, lesson plans, and teaching methodology. • Together with the Heads of Department, analyzing effectiveness of instruction at each year level, identifying areas for improvement, and making recommendations for improvement. • Assisting with the review of student reports, including checking teachers’ grades and comments for accuracy and reliability. • Together with the Heads of Department, monitoring assessment of students, including the validity and regularity of exams and other assessment instruments.
3. Student Life • In association with other administrators in the school, take responsibility for the welfare and discipline of the secondary school students. When called upon to lead certain investigations, insure that all documentation and evidence is complete and accurate and letters to students and parents are thorough and precise. • Monitor procedures at play, lunchtime, wet play, home time, and, when necessary, consult with other leaders to implement appropriate changes to procedures. • Be responsible, in consultation with the leadership of the school, for special events and the appointment of special coordinators when necessary. (e.g. World Perspectives Week, Prize Giving Day, camps, special days). • Coordinate Work Assemblies.
4. Resources • Making recommendations to the School leadership for special budget expenditures and significant spending initiatives that would improve the school. • Helping acquire necessary resources through discussion with the School leadership and other members of staff. This includes teaching aids, furniture, subject equipment and consumables. • Reviewing all stationary supplies orders before the requests are submitted to the School leadership. |
Job Requirements: |
1. Have a minimum 3 years of working in a private or international school, with previous leadership or administrative experience as a plus; 2. Support Yew Wah's mission, principles and practices; 3. Demonstrate passion for international education; 4. Have excellent communication skills and a public presence which engenders respect and trust from students and parents; 5. Be a detail-oriented person with excellent time management and editing skills; 6. Have a working knowledge of the National Curriculum of England, the Cambridge administrated IGCSE, and A-levels; 7. Have a working knowledge of the university and college application procedures of European, North American, and Asian school systems; 8. Possess a vision of the “big picture” of the school and the need for all departments to work together for the good of the students; 9. As a plus, have advanced bilingual skills (English and Chinese). |
